JPIC Province of Santa Fe Participates in Intergenerational Dialogue for the Construction of Colombia’s Climate Roadmap for COP30
Bogotá, the 26th March, 2025 – The Office of Justice, Peace, and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) of the Province of Santa Fe announces its outstanding participation in the Third National Dialogues for Contribution (NDC) workshop, a crucial space for the construction of the final document that Colombia will present at the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
This workshop, which was developed in an innovative format with an intergenerational focus, brought together diverse stakeholders from Colombian society, including young climate leaders, representatives of Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities, academics, government officials, and civil society organizations. JPIC’s active and proactive participation in this forum underscores its unwavering commitment to climate justice and building a sustainable future for Colombia and the planet.
DNCs: Colombia’s Climate Roadmap
The DNCs are a participatory, multi-sector process led by the Colombian government to update and strengthen the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which are each country’s commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change, within the framework of the Paris Agreement.
The importance of the NDCs lies in their fundamental role in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, which seeks to limit the increase in global temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius, and preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels. In this sense, the DNCs represent a unique opportunity for Colombia to define an ambitious climate roadmap consistent with its responsibilities and capabilities, which will significantly contribute to mitigating climate change and building resilience to its impacts.
JPIC Province of Santa Fe: A Key Player in Building Climate Justice
The participation of the JPIC Province of Santa Fe in the Third DNC workshop is part of its long history of work in defense of human rights and environmental protection. The Office, which is part of the Franciscan Order, has been a key player in promoting climate justice in Colombia through political advocacy, environmental education, and support for vulnerable communities.
In this sense, JPIC’s participation in the third DNC workshop was characterized by its focus on promoting the active participation of youth and Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities in decision-making regarding climate change, as well as its advocacy for the inclusion of adaptation and mitigation measures based on natural solutions and respect for the rights of Sister Mother Earth.
Continuity and Follow-up: COP16 Cali and COP30 Belém
The Third DNC workshop represents a continuation and follow-up to the events that JPIC Province of Santa Fe helped coordinate at San Buenaventura University in Cali, within the framework of COP16 on Biodiversity. On that occasion, the Office facilitated spaces for dialogue between various social actors to promote the inclusion of biodiversity in public policies and decision-making on climate change.
The experience and knowledge accumulated at COP16 Cali have been fundamental to JPIC Santa Fe’s participation in the third DNC workshop, as well as to its contribution to the construction of the Colombian climate roadmap towards COP30, to be held in Belém, Brazil, in 2025.
A call to collective action
JPIC Province of Santa Fe calls for collective action from all sectors of Colombian society to build a sustainable and just future for all. The Office invites young people, Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities, academics, government officials, and civil society organizations to join this common effort and actively participate in building the Colombian climate roadmap toward COP30.
