Franciscans at the COP
The Plenary Council of the Order made it clear that “as an international Order, (we propose) to make a clear and radical choice for the lifestyle indicated by Laudato si’, authentically living our charism and undertaking a path of ecological conversion, grounded in Franciscan values, in the formation of the Friars Minor, including experiences and real connection with people who suffer” (CPO/18, n. 189–191).
COP26 in Glasgow, United Kingdom, will be the most important climate summit since the historic Paris Agreement was reached at COP21 in 2015, as it will be the first time that countries are expected to update their commitments to reduce CO2 emission targets.
Therefore, it is also crucial to bring the voices of the victims of the climate crisis into the international climate negotiation space at COP26 and to mobilize religious communities, including the Franciscans.
