The fundamental message of the encyclical\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Laudato si<\/span><\/span>\u2019<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>can be summarised in the expression\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>integral ecology<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>. With these two words, Pope Francis invites us to an attitude that does not separate ecological commitment from that for social justice or peace in human relations, because all these aspects are close<\/span><\/span>ly connected. We are called to realise that there is a close relationship between the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>culture of waste<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>, which creates polluting material waste, and a social structure that\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>discards<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the weakest people or those who are not economically productive. The pr<\/span><\/span>oposal of an\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>integral ecology<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>recovers the connection between justice, spirituality, peaceful human relations and care of the\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>common home<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>. The expression\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>integral ecology<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>unifies in a single term the concepts that we are accustomed to indicating as\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>justice, peace and integrity of creation<\/span><\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Attention to this dimension of integral ecology is part of Franciscan identity, and therefore of our formation. It is enough to read art. 1 of our General Constitutions to understand this: it is particularly imp<\/span><\/span>ortant because, at the beginning of the Constitutions, it briefly expresses our identity<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The article<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>consists of two paragraphs: let us focus our attention on the second, which says that\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>the friars are bound to lead a radically evangelical life<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and illu<\/span>strates its characteristics, which are the spirit of prayer and devotion, fraternal communion, the witness of penance and minority, and evangelisation. This last point, which is that of our mission of evangelisation, is described as follows<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>in charity to<\/span>wards all mankind, they are to announce the Gospel throughout the whole world and to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>preach reconciliation, peace and justice by their deeds; and to show respect for creation<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the first article of the Constitutions, therefore, importance is also given<\/span>\u00a0to reconciliation, peace, justice, and respect for creation: this means that they are truly important for the essential profile of the friar minor. This first article was modified by our General Chapter of 2003. At the end of paragraph 2, which already sp<\/span>oke of\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>preaching, with deeds, reconciliation, peace and justice<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0(and stopped here), the expression\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>showing supreme respect for creation<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0was added. It was the recognition that care for the common home is an essential part of our charism and that a rigor<\/span>ous description of our identity as Friars Minor cannot fail to speak also of\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>respect for creation<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.\u00a0 The word\u00a0<\/span>respect<\/span><\/i>\u00a0(in Latin\u00a0<\/span>reverentia<\/span><\/i>) was chosen to express that attitude of minority and universal brotherhood\u00a0<\/span>which makes us truly lesser brothers. We can say that our Constitutions anticipated what was strongly affirmed by the Encyclical\u00a0<\/span>Laudato\u00a0<\/span><\/i>s<\/span><\/i>i<\/span><\/i>\u2019<\/span><\/i>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Ratio Formationis Franciscanae<\/span><\/i>\u00a0a<\/span>lso addresses the theme of justice, peace and integrity of creation several times, for example when it illustrates the fundamental features of the\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>evangelical vocation of the friar minor<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0(articles 21. 25. 32. 34). Since I am unable to examine all these t<\/span>exts at this time, I will simply cite Article 86 of the\u00a0<\/span>Ratio<\/span><\/i>:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All the Friars and candidates should be formed to preach peace and justice through their deeds<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>and to overcome evil by doing good (cf. GGCC 68 \u00a71). And they should show feelings of respect for<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>creation in so far as it is a sign of the Creator, inducing others to be constructors of peace and to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>safeguard creation (cf. GGCC 71)<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\n

We must therefore affirm that justice, peace and integrity of creation are part of a complete Franciscan formation, ac<\/span>cording to the\u00a0<\/span>Ratio Formationis<\/span><\/i>\u00a0of the Order. The article cited speaks of\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>all the friars and candidates<\/span>\u201d<\/span>, and therefore refers to both ongoing and initial formation: no one is excluded. This text, which is from 2003, obviously cannot quote\u00a0<\/span>Laudato s<\/span><\/i>i<\/span><\/i>\u2019<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>but<\/span>, as we have said for our General Constitutions, in a certain way anticipates it and is perfectly in tune with the concept of integral ecology.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The last Plenary Council of the Order, which took place in Nairobi in 2018, speaks explicitly of the Encyclical\u00a0<\/span>Laudato si<\/span><\/i>\u2019<\/span><\/i>. It is one of the seven themes identified as fundamental for the Order today and is one of the three operational proposals formulate<\/span>d in the final summary of the document: it is worth reading No. 190, which says<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To use means based on Franciscan values in the formation of the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Friars Minor, including experiences and real connection with people who<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>suffer. Every Entity of the Order shoul<\/span><\/span>d address the theme of evangelisation<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in the spirit of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Laudato si<\/span><\/span>\u2019<\/span><\/span>\u00a0giving special attention to human ecology in initial<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and ongoing Formation. In all the entities of the Order, specific actions of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>integral ecology involving our friars and our institutional<\/span><\/span>\u00a0activities should be<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>promoted.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

It is also for this\u00a0<\/span>recommendation<\/span>\u00a0of our Order that we wanted to hold this global meeting with the brothers in initial formation.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This first presentation of mine was therefore intended to show that the commitment to justic<\/span>e, peace and integrity of creation is required by the fundamental texts of the Order, starting from the first article of the\u00a0<\/span>General Constitutions<\/span><\/i>, passing through the\u00a0<\/span>Ratio Formationis Franciscanae<\/span><\/i>\u00a0to the recent Plenary Council of the Order. Now, the foll<\/span>owing presentations will focus on the\u00a0<\/span>Laudato si<\/span><\/i>\u2019<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and the initiatives of the Order since this Encyclical.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
