Michael Perry: Challenges of JPIC for the Order of Friars Minor Today"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My dear brothers (and sisters),<br>\nMay the Lord give you peace!<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\nis a great joy and honor for me to share with you today some thoughts on the challenges\nthat friars of the Order, indeed, all Christians, face as we struggle to come\nto terms with the conditions of what it means to be disciples of Jesus Christ,\nmembers of the Church, of the human community, and bearers of the joy of the\nGospel (Final Document, OFM General Chapter, 2015). As the 1971 Final Document of\nthe Special Synod of Bishops entitled Justice in the World cited above makes\neminently clear, discipleship in the community of Jesus and the Church\nnecessarily implies that we embrace an integral understanding of the faith. In\n1971, the Bishops proclaimed that justice is an intrinsic dimension of the\nfaith, of evangelization. While some in the Church have made efforts to weaken\nthis radical declaration, a growing number of Christians, of Friars, and other members\nof the Franciscan movement are opening their minds and hearts to a much\nbroader, more integral vision of the intersection \u2013 better yet, the\ninseparability \u2013 of faith and human development, solidarity, and justice\napplied to both the social and the natural realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ofmjpic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/EN_Presentacion-OFM_comprimido.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"331\" height=\"463\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ofmjpic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Schermata-2020-01-20-alle-12.09.58.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5790\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ofmjpic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Schermata-2020-01-20-alle-12.09.58.png 331w, https:\/\/ofmjpic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Schermata-2020-01-20-alle-12.09.58-214x300.png 214w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 331px) 100vw, 331px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent\nefforts by some members of the Church\u2019s hierarchy and faithful have sought to\ndrive a wedge between <em>Caritas<\/em> and <em>Justitia<\/em> but these efforts have\nmet with little satisfying success. Still, far too many Christians, including\nFriars and other religious, fail to recognize the Biblical and ecclesial\ncalling to embrace a wider vision of God\u2019s dream for humanity, and of the\nresponsibilities for promoting a world defined by the practice of justice,\nmercy, truth, peace, solidarity, and care for the natural world, a vision\npromoted by Pope Francis in the encyclical entitled <em>Laudato si\u2019<\/em>. 3.I\nhope that what I now share with you will encourage you to look beyond the\ndaunting challenges of trying to convince Christian believers who struggle to\nunderstand and embrace the spiritual unity that exists between Credo \u2013 I\nbelieve \u2013 and Praxis \u2013 therefore I love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When\napplied to the concept of a Franciscan vision of the intrinsic nature of JPIC\nat work in the construction of our identity, the DNA of Franciscan identity\nserves as an instrument for giving shape and expression to each and every\nthought, each and every action conducted by Franciscans everywhere in the\nworld. When Francis of Assisi met up with those who were socially excluded,\nmarginalized, those who were poor, the lepers, he recognized that God was\npresent in these brothers and sisters. Conversely, when he took time apart to pray\nand reflect on his relationship with God, he felt also the presence of all of\nhumanity and of creation present, especially the suffering of humanity and\ncreation. It is for this reason that Franciscans living and working in\nIndonesia, South Sudan, Italy, Canada, Peru, Poland, Brazil or in any other\npart of the world should all be seeking to give public expression to the truth\nof their identity as Friars Minor and as members of the Franciscan\nmovement\/family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let us turn our attention to some very specific, practical challenges that confront the Order of Friars Minor in attempting to understand and integrate the transverse values of JPIC into daily spiritual, fraternal, and missionary\/pastoral life.
