A celebration of The Season of Creation<\/em>, and the Dedication of the Synod to St. Francis<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE DATE<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\nyear\u2019s Feast day of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4th<\/sup>) has extra\nsignificance because it coincides with a number of important events and\nanniversaries:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  •  It takes place only two days before the Synod\non the Amazon \u2014 the first ever synod on the theme of integral ecology.<\/li>
  •  The feast of St. Francis marked the conclusion\nof The Season of Creation<\/em>, the annual celebration that takes place\nbetween September 1st<\/sup> and October 4th<\/sup>. This year was the\nfirst time that it was officially proclaimed by Pope Francis for the Catholic\nChurch.<\/li>
  •  The Feast of St. Francis falls shortly before\nthe 40th<\/sup> anniversary of Pope St. John Paul II\u2019s proclamation of St.\nFrancis as patron saint of ecology (November 29th<\/sup>, 1979).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    THE EVENT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Pope\nFrancis will host a celebration in the Vatican Gardens during which an oak tree\nfrom Assisi will be planted, as a visible sign of integral ecology.  The event will see the participation of indigenous\nleaders and Church leaders, sending a powerful message to the world about the\nChurch’s commitment to the care of our common home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

    This\ncelebration and the symbolic planting of a tree in a garden that is at the\nheart of the universal Church will be an opportunity to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

     1. communicate the importance of The Season\nof Creation<\/em> \u2014 this is the first public symbolic action by Pope Francis\nfollowing his recent invitation to the World Church to celebrate this “season\nof increased prayer and effort on behalf of our common home”.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2.\ncommunicate the importance of the Synod on the Amazon, as well as\nproposing  St. Francis as a model and\nguide for the synodal process.  With this\nin mind, the event will include a prayer of dedication of the Synod to the\nintercession of St. Francis, praying that the Synod will be a fruitful step in\nthe discernment of new paths for the Church and for an Integral Ecology<\/em>\nin this critical region of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
