Testimonies of Laudato si\u2019<\/em> Animators from different countries. Humanising Laudato si\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

PANAMA CITY – As Pope Francis constantly\nreminded us, the youth is the future of the world and are the ones responsible\nfor mobilising action to solve our environmental crises. Therefore, Global\nCatholic Climate Movement together with the Justice, Peace and the Integrity of\nCreation Order  Office of Friars Minor (OFM\nJPIC) held workshops to explain climate science and humanise climate action\naround the globe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The day started with presentations that\nexplain the adverse effects of the world\u2019s consumeristic ways and dependence on\nan unsustainable economic system. Igor Bastos from the Global Catholic Climate\nMovement explained the paradox of today\u2019s society showing the need to acquire\nmore worldly riches despite the fact that more than half of the world are\nimpoverished and risk losing their land due to climate change. Additionally,\nFr. German Argueta OFM from El Salvador said that \u201cwhen we disrespect for the\nEarth, we disrespect the humanity.\u201d Thus, it is vital that recognising who are\nthe victims of environmental degradation in order to humanise climate change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the afternoon, we heard from a panel of\nyouth who taken up Pope Francis\u2019 call to action in their local regions. Ana\nBelen from Ecuador shared an anecdote of how important the work of the church\nis in protecting the Amazonian communities. When a construction of a\nhydroelectric plant risked their communities, the church started petitions and\nmet with important people to highlight the illegality and immorality of such\nplans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maria Agustina Rodriguez Ortiz de Rosas\nfrom Argentina also shared a personal encounter of a health problem triggered\nby air pollution. Upon developing a throat tumour, she was urged to further\nwork with the Sisters of Charity to spread the Laudato Si message and make\neco-friendly choices in her daily life such as change soaps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, the common message for Dayana\nBano of Ecuador, Tatiana Rodriguez of Colombia and Jose Abad Saenz of Costa\nRica was the need to grow a network of Catholics who are committed to climate\naction. \u201cAs Catholics, we have the obligation to follow the Gospel. If God gave\nus the earth, we need to use the resources sustainably. If we want change, we\ncannot exclude anyone,\u201d says Abad-Saenz.  \n\nFinally, to close the\nday, the Franciscan friars celebrated mass at the Laudato Si village. The\nvolunteers were given a blessing in preparation for the World Youth Day as\nagents of our mission to care for our common home. \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
